World War C!
October 5th, 2006
Parody is the sincerest form of flattery.
If you thought Max Brooks’ World War Z: An Oral History of the Zombie Wars was amazing, then you simply MUST check out SomethingAwful’s absolutely brilliant send-up:
World War C: An Oral History of the Cobra Wars!
Remember, folks: the forces of Cobra may rise again at any moment. Only a knowledge of our past will be able to help us if the “Blue Wave” ever rises again…because knowing is half the battle.
Day Against DRM!
October 3rd, 2006
Today’s the day, people! Stand up and resist the forces of Corporate Bullshit by practicing your best Ghandi-esque passive protest skillz: refuse to purchase any “protected media” - be that mp3s, movies, ebooks, or digital media whatsoever - encumbered with Digital Rights Management.
This is much easier than you’d think. There are plenty of sites on the ‘net that sell DRM-free music and media. I tend to focus only on music, thus:
eMusic.com is arguable the best site for purchasing individual tracks and entire albums of completely DRM-free music. And not only are they DRM-free, they also have the best selection of independent music I’ve ever seen.
DRMFree.org is also a wonderful resource for searching for DRM-free music. It’s still pretty new, but it does a great job.
And finally…perhaps you’re still unsure of what this whole “DRM” mess is all about. Well, if so, then forget about all the above links until you’ve gone to DRM.info and seen just how DRM destroys - and I do mean destroys - your basic consumer rights. After consulting that site, if you still want to throw your money away by purchasing materials from the iTunes Music Store or Napster or any of the many, many other DRM-happy music “stores” on the web, then by all means enjoy wasting your hard-earned cash.
